This article focuses on the Vision Documents of the Arab civil society organizations in Israel as an act of citizenship and an expression of the politics of contention used by the Palestinians in Israel. We argue that these documents challenge both the political inclusiveness of the identity of Israel as a ‘Jewish and democratic’ state, and the political continuity of collective identity of the Palestinian people. With these documents, the Arab civil society organizations reclaim responsibility over their political future by clinging to the Israeli citizenship framework, but at the same time attempt to change its nature from within, by re-associating the Palestinians in Israel with the core issues of the stumbling peace process, especially in regard to the ‘Right of Return’. The paper contends that for the Palestinians in Israel, the national and the civic frameworks do not circulate in separate orbits, but constitute and reframe each other.  相似文献

Immigration historians have illuminated the institutional forces that made possible Eastern and southern European immigrants' inclusion in the white racial category in the early twentieth century, initiating their ascent into mainstream America. Sociologists have shown that their descendants assimilated into American society while maintaining symbolic attachments to their ethnic roots. But, whereas current studies of immigrant racialization have focused on the strategies of immigrants of colour for asserting a higher position in the American social hierarchy, scholars have generally overlooked such processes for phenotypically white immigrants. This paper highlights first and 1.5 generation Romanian immigrants' strategies for navigating their ambivalent relationship to Americanness. While they assumed their whiteness unproblematically, Romanian Americans sought to distinguish themselves from whites and non-whites on the basis of their ethnicity. Furthermore, they used American values to distance themselves from their former compatriots. Through moral bricolage, Romanians made strategic use of desirable traits they associated with being Romanian and American, melding them into a particularly worthy ethnic identity.  相似文献

Capsule Barn Swallows showed a consistent association with cattle across the UK, but certain landscape features, particularly mixed field types and tall trees, were also important.

Aim To provide nationally representative data on habitat selection in foraging Barn Swallows.

Method Observers carried out four timed point counts within an allocated 2-km square(s). Point counts were at least 500 m apart and considered as independent sample points. Each point count covered 100 m radius and was visited twice during the summer. An index of foraging activity was derived from the number of foraging passes made by Barn Swallows within ten minutes. The maximum count of Swallows present was also recorded. Habitat data included the presence or absence of landscape features and buildings and the proportion of area covered by particular crop and boundary types within the 100 m count radius.

Results Cattle were the single most important and most consistent variable associated with foraging Barn Swallows, in every UK region. Horses were also important in the southeast. Grassland was only important if livestock were present. Foraging pass rates were higher where count circles contained a mixture of grass and arable fields rather than just one or the other. There was a general positive relationship between foraging pass rates and the presence of tall trees in boundaries, and this was significant in the arable eastern region of the UK, where their relative importance of concentrating prey may be more acute.

Conclusion Historical changes in the distribution and availability of habitat features associated with foraging Barn Swallows are consistent with regional differences in population change for this species in the UK. These patterns of association are discussed in terms of changes in land use, the widespread loss of mixed farming and simplifications to landscape complexity.  相似文献

Application of phylogenetic species recognition to morphologically recognized species in the genera Cystoseira Agardh and Halidrys Lyngbye on North American west coasts revealed little genetic variation despite a remarkable degree of morphological variation currently used to recognize and delineate species. Whereas morphological characteristics allow recognition of two genera, four morphological species and three informal forms, maximum genetic variation among them was similar to that characteristic of the intraspecific level in European congeners and other Fucales. Among morphological species and forms, nucleotide variation in a combined 26S (large subunit (LSU)) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA analysis was below 3% while it was 1% or less for the RUBISCO spacer of the chloroplast DNA. Comparison of the LSU data to available data for European congeners showed that the genera Cystoseira and Halidrys are not monophyletic and that the previously recognized Cystoseiraceae should be included within the family Sargassaceae. These observations suggest that the current taxonomy for the Sargassaceae fails to reflect evolutionary history because Atlantic and Pacific Cystoseira and Halidrys appear to have arrived at similar morphologies independently. Our results indicate a comparatively recent establishment on the west coast of North America of a sargassacean progenitor whose descendant taxa have experienced limited genetic divergence and are characterized by a high capacity for phenotypic variation despite their overall genetic similarity.  相似文献

Molecular studies have been instrumental for refining species boundaries in the coral genus Pocillopora and revealing hidden species diversity within the extensively studied global species Pocillopora damicornis. Here we formally revise the taxonomic status of species closely related to and within the P. damicornis species complex, taking into account both genetic evidence and new data on morphometrics, including fine‐scale corallite and coenosteum structure. We found that mitochondrial molecular phylogenies are congruent with groups based on gross‐morphology, therefore reflecting species‐level differentiation. However, high levels of gross morphological plasticity and shared morphological characteristics mask clear separation for some groups. Fine‐scale morphological variation, particularly the shape and type of columella, was useful for differentiating between clades and provides an excellent signature of the evolutionary relationships among genetic lineages. As introgressive hybridization and incomplete lineage sorting complicate the delineation of species within the genus on the basis of a single species concept, the Unified Species Concept may represent a suitable approach in revising Pocillopora taxonomy. Eight species are herein described (P. damicornis, P. acuta, P. aliciae, P. verrucosa, P. meandrina, P. eydouxi, P. cf. brevicornis), including a novel taxon – P ocillopora bairdi sp. nov. Prosodic structure is a grammatical component that serves multiple functions in the production, comprehension and acquisition of language. Prosodic boundaries are critical for the understanding of the nature of the prosodic structure of language, and important progress has been made in the past decades in illuminating their properties. We first review recent prosodic boundary research from the point of view of gestural coordination. We then go on to tie in this work to questions of speech planning and manual and head movement. We conclude with an outline of a new direction of research which is needed for a full understanding of prosodic boundaries and their role in the speech production process.  相似文献

Through first‐principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the atomic structure and electronic properties of intrinsic and passivated Σ3 (114) grain boundaries (GBs) in Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) are studied. Intrinsic GBs in CZTSe create localized deep states within the band gap and thus act as Shockley‐Read‐Hall recombination centers, which are detrimental to cell performance. Defects, such as ZnSn (Zn atoms on Sn sites), Na+i (interstitial Na ions), and OSe (O atoms on Se sites), prefer to segregate into GBs in CZTSe. The segregation of these defects at GBs exhibit two beneficial effects: 1) eliminating the deep gap states via wrong bonds breaking or weakening at GBs, making GBs electrically benign; and 2) creating hole barriers and electron sinkers, promoting effective charge separation at GBs. The results suggest a unique chemical approach for engineering GBs in CZTSe to achieve improved cell performance.  相似文献

Species ranges are expected to expand along their cooler boundaries in response to rising temperatures associated with current global climate change. However, this ‘fingerprint’ of climate change is yet to be assessed for an entire flora. Here, we examine patterns of altitudinal range change in the complete native vascular flora of sub‐Antarctic Marion Island. We demonstrate a rapid mean upslope expansion in the flora since 1966, in response to 1.2 °C warming on the island. The 3.4±0.8 m yr?1 (mean±SE) upslope expansion rate documented is amongst the highest estimates from partial floras. However, less than half of the species in the flora were responsible for the expansion trend, demonstrating that the global fingerprint of warming may be driven by a highly responsive subset of the species pool. Individual range expansion rates varied greatly, with species‐specific niche requirements explaining some of this variation. As a result of the idiosyncratic expansion rates, altitudinal patterns of species richness and community composition changed considerably, with the formation of no‐analog communities at high and intermediate altitudes. Therefore, both species‐ and community‐level changes have occurred in the flora of Marion Island over a relatively short period of rapid warming, demonstrating the sensitivity of high latitude communities to climate change. Patterns of change within this flora illustrate the range of variation in species responses to climate change and the consequences thereof for species distributions and community reorganization.  相似文献
